The so-called “pipets” are not only compostable and biodegrade in 180 days, but can even be eaten after using the oil contained inside.
More than 23,000 tons of single-use plastic are generated annually by food establishments in Chile, a worrying figure considering the environmental impact of this amount of waste. I Am Not Plastic’s motivation for launching an innovative olive oil sachet format made from seaweed was to contribute to reversing this scenario. The novel drop-shaped container, known as pipets, is not only 100% compostable under home conditions, and biodegrades in 180 days, but can even be eaten after using the oil contained inside.
To achieve this milestone, the Chilean company established an alliance with a European benchmark in sustainable packaging, betting on eliminating plastic sachets forever with this new proposal, perfect for use in restaurants, take-out meals or simply in a lunch box, which has the most demanding food safety certifications. One of the great advantages of the pipets is that their use is convenient and practical, as it is only necessary to cut the tip and squeeze to obtain the single dose of 10 ml of olive oil just right for a dish.
This launch adds to I Am Not Plastic’s extensive portfolio of compostable products, which includes cling film, garbage bags, zip-lock bags, pet waste bags and light bulbs for household use, as well as others for the industrial sector such as stretch film, widely used for packaging, and vacuum bags, which are key in the food industry. “Since we started we set out to motivate people to build a world without plastic, but making their lives not more complicated because of it. We have made progress and this new step opens doors for us in the gastronomic sector, which undoubtedly has a pending debt when it comes to achieving sustainable business,” said Rodrigo Sandoval, founder of I Am Not Plastic, adding that this is the starting point of a series of innovations that they will introduce to the country to offer ecological packaging alternatives to the food industry.
